Lectio Divina VII - Psalm 27 - Inner Directed

Posted on Jul 4th, 2009 by Angel of Healing : Addiction overcomer Angel of Healing
This beautiful psalm talks about the joy and peace of being in the house of God (I AM-ness), 'the only quiet, secure place in a noisy world'. This has two possible meanings: being in the 'physical' house of God - our favourite church, shrine or retreat where we can enjoy true rest - but perhaps more to the point being united with I AM-ness in our interior castle (to use St Teresa's term) or inner being.

Only our inner selves are 'the perfect getaway, far from the buzz of traffic' where we can feel secure in communion with our true Self. I believe this is of capital importance for overcoming addicition, since it is only when become inner directed and learn to find true happiness in 'the kingdom of heaven within' that we can break the heavy chains of addiction and come to true peace and contentment.

Most addicts have sought solace from our feelings of loliness, fear, guilt, shame and inadequacy in destructive relationships, drugs. alcohol, food, gambling, sex and a myriad other externalities that gave us a fleeting respite from the pain and confusion we were experiencing. Sooner or later, as addiction took over our lives, that pain was exponentially compounded until some got to a state of total isolation and despair that drove them to crime, violence, abuse and (in the case of a neighbour and childhood friend of mine) suicide.

This psalm give us the long-term solution, that of resting in God, of singing and finding joy and solace under the wings of that Love eternal which is always with us, if we only care to open the gates of our hearts and minds and quiet all external and internal noise.
This is why meditation and prayer are so important, because it is only in meditation and the quieting of the mind that we can connect with that inner wisdom, that inner spark that will quickly become a transformational fire for our souls.

I pray that all of us do indeed turn within and reach that plateau of utter rest and fulfillment where we can sing with David: 'with him on my side I am fearless, afraid of noone or nothing'.
